Did Jay-Z, Kanye West & Romain Gavras just raise the bar? I think so. This new music video for “No Church in the Wild” is incredibly awesome. Find the song (feat. Frank Ocean) on the Watch the Throne album.

Glass Vaults + experimental pop + tour dates +

05. 31

Glass Vaults are New Zealand natives Richard Larsen + Rowan Pierce. To date, they have released two EPs, both on Fort Lauderdale based label, Juboxr. The pairs’ songs hypnotically migrate between subtle electronics & pulsating percussion that serves as a rich textural veneer to Richard Larsen’s haunting yet sentimental vocals. Their live show takes the spaciousness & melodic clarity of their recorded work & stretches it into wall of sound environments moving through lush, fully realised universes of textural sound. Richard + Rowan grew up in rural Manawatu, New Zealand & met at university in Wellington where they began developing aural architecture with melody & arrangement. Whilst Larsen & Pierce are the core songwriters & performers, they work extensively in the studio with musician + producer Bevan Smith (Signer, Over the Atlantic, The Ruby Suns).

Glass Vaults first EP, Glass, was recorded on Rowan’s grandmothers farm in March 2010. They teamed up with Smith to produce the recordings into the final release, which was released via Jukboxr on a 12” limited edition vinyl. Their second EP, Into Clear, was released in October 2011 & was recorded over various locations including a family farm, this time closer to home just outside of Wellington.

Last week, the duo flew over to the US for their 1st ever show in the US & the start of their summer residence at Pianos in NYC. Glass Vaults will be staying in American soil for 3 months touring as well as developing & recording new material to be released throughout 2012. All confirmed dates can be found after the break.

A Lull + tour dates + psychedelic rock +

05. 29

A Lull recently announced the forthcoming release of Meat Mountain — set for release June 26th on Lujo Records — & it signifies a new freshness, growth + maturity. The Chicago-based 5-some consisting of Nigel Evan Dennis, Todd Miller, Mike Brown, Ashwin Deepankar, & Aaron Vincel, is always changing, trying to evolve from what it was, into something exciting & new. This can be heard in the rollicking first single “Summer Dress,” which can be download for free below. The band has announced a new run of summer tour dates in the 2nd half of July into the 1st part of August, taking them from the midwest to the east coast, & back. They’re also playing the Pitchfork Music Festival on Sunday, July 15th, on a day that also includes Vampire Weekend, The Field, Beach House, Oneohtrix Point Never, + many more. Full list of dates after the break.

During the recording of Meat Mountain, the quintet sought to achieve more by using less. While previous recordings often relied on creating “walls of sound,” Meat Mountain employs open space as an instrument as well. Most of the core instrumentation was written live, recording demos, rehashing & rebuilding. The band continued to diversify its sound by discovering synth tones that seemed to almost feel like throwback sounds, but new all the same. There was more experimentation with elements such as saxophone solos, flute riffs & even cymbals into the recordings for the 1st time. The resulting music has a distinctly sincere quality, & is more transparent than any of A Lull’s previous work.

07.15 Pitchfork Music Festival - Union Park - Chicago, IL
07.25 Beachland Tavern - Cleveland, OH

Bobby Tank + electronic + glitch + experimental + dubstep +

05. 29

This artist was recommended by our good friends over at Solardip.

Clearly influenced by UK dubstep, glitch-hop + 80s boogie, Bobby Tank’s sound is buzzing with nostalgic synths, soulful, blenderized cut-ups, woven leads & atmospherics, thick with heavy bass pressure.

His latest output, a neon-like 4-tracker, the Afterburn EP, was released earlier this month via MofoHifi Records. This extended player includes 4 tracks alongside a giveaway track, “Circles”.
2PPM + Two People Playing Music + video + experimental +
