SSION + electronic pop + live dates + Nightfeelings +

05. 16

Hailing from Kansas City’s unexpected art-scene, SSION has reached the apex of synth-pop perfection with the album Bent, out August 7th on Dovecote. Led by the charismatically avant gender outlaw Cody Critcheloe, SSION creates music that is simultaneously dance inducing + cheekily crass & that irreverently pokes fun at contemporary culture. Tracks are meticulously crafted with reverbed synth, deep bass & vocals that verge on the addictive. Critcheloe’s creativity is not bounded by music making, as he has been commissioned to produce music videos for a multitude of heavyweights in the unconventional-pop world, including Peaches, Gossip, CSS + Santigold as well as promotional videos for the vibrant outsider designer & fellow Kansas City local, Peggy Noland. Drawing from a multifaceted artistic background, SSION is a total multimedia experience playfully on the vanguard of culture, replete with high-concept visuals, performance, costuming & make-up. The enhanced hard copy re-release of Bent will include previously unreleased bonus tracks + remixes from MNDR, Grimes, Nightfeelings, Physical Therapy & more.

Bent features the lushly reverbed introverted single “My Love Grows In The Dark.” In the accompanying video, conceived & produced by Critcheloe, the front man portrays himself as the antithesized pop-star, journeying through a surreal house of androgynous dancers & confronted with issues of representation, indifference + intimacy. The track got a dreamy disco remix treatment by Nightfeelings (Nick Weiss of Teengirl Fantasy) & is available for free download below. SSION not only nods to the most influential & iconic pop artists of the past, but also stands to carve out its own place in the future as a whole new breed of pop.

SSION will play select live dates across on the east + west coast, appearing with Gossip, JD Samson & Sharon Needles. He will also be performing at this year’s San Francisco Pride.

DARKSIDE + Nicolas Jaar + Dave Harrington + electronic + video +

05. 16

DARKSIDE began when a converter plug exploded in Nicolas Jaar & Dave Harrington’s Berlin hotel room during their summer tour. When the smoke cleared, their white Genelec speakers were fried. But rather than retiring for the night, they plugged into a computer & merged sounds, forming DARKSIDE.

The duo continued their symbiosis after returning to New York. Dave’s indie rock bravado & Nico’s electronic percussion came together in a series of Brooklyn recording sessions. In their dim basement studio, Dave’s soprano licks + Nico’s falsetto converged as they formed a 3 track, self-titled EP.

Check out their 1st video for “A1” directed by Pomp&Clout/Ryan Staake. Stream the 3 tracks right after.

HEALTH + Max Payne 3 + noise + rock + stream +

05. 15

Listen to the new HEALTH song from the Max Payne 3 Soundtrack.

HEALTH’s unique blend of rock, powerful drums + electronic soundscapes lends itself perfectly to the score for Max Payne 3. Taking influences from Brazil, Max’s native New York & the themes of the original games, HEALTH have put together a fantastic soundtrack that perfectly embodies the tone & the atmosphere of the game. Distinctive arrangements unique to each level accompany Max on his journey through the game’s locations, perfectly framing the game’s epic action sequences and the dark and gritty story.
Active Child + Balam Acab + live + review + Mohawk + Austin +

05. 15

Little late on this one but Welikeitindie got to drop in on an excellent show last Friday, once again at the Mohawk here in Austin, TX.

Avant-pop group Active Child + witch-house wunderkind Balam Acab were playing the outside stage. Both acts have a dreamlike quality, but where Active Child takes you soaring on wings, Balam Acab lets you get lost, adrift on a sea of haunted sub-conscious. It seemed a slightly odd pairing so I was curious to see how it played out.

Balam Acab was up first. I have to admit I was skeptical of how this would go. Don’t get me wrong, I love Acab’s studio work but the live show amounts to little more than a small skinny dude hunched over a sampler for 40 minutes. There is not much going on to hold you captive & the music is set to such a low BPM that no one can manage much more than an off beat head bob dance wise. A companion told me he needed someone else on stage to keep it interesting, but I have to disagree. One of the things I like so much about the ambient archetypal output of this act is the purity of his approach & the clarity if his vision. To add another member would dilute the product & perhaps limit the scope. But maybe some nice visuals to accompany the music would go a long way.

Truthfully though, I only struggled with this at first. Once I stopped watching, waiting & wanting some incredible stage show, I was able to start drifting into the broad shallow pool of mixed emotional electro goth that defines Balam Acab’s work. And this is where the real show was anyway, in the music. Standing/swaying there, having a collective experience with more volume than I ever gave the artist at home or in my earbuds was baptismal. Certainly as surreal as the ether the music was founded on. I went away from it satisfied.

Active Child headlined the evening. Admittedly, having only heard a few singles, I was not as invested in them as the previous act & knew very little about the group. But always ready for a fresh experience, I was surprised to find them more versatile than expected. I was most surprised to see Pat Grossi playing an actual harp during several of the tunes & was genuinely impressed with the angelic falsetto voice he is known for. It reminds me of Antony Hegarty, every bit as mournful but less idiosyncratic perhaps. A live drummer & a multi-instrumentalist backed Pat, rounding out the sound & providing the stage presence that Balam Acab lacked earlier in the evening.

It was an easier show to digest & the crowd reacted well. Acab’s music hinges on subtlety but there was none of that in the Active Child set. The rise & fall of the song structures were immediately recognizable & the pop sensibility in the songwriting made the tunes I hadn’t heard feel like familiar ground. More than this though, I was able to instantly catch the emotional overtones at work & found that insular & cathartic experience that we all seek in a pop song. Amen to that.

Turbo Fruits + rock + garage + surf + tour dates +

05. 15

On September 11th, Serpents & Snakes Records will release Butter, the 3rd full-length from Turbo Fruits. The Nashville, TN, quartet plays rock n’ roll filled with wild abandon & unfettered debauchery; with buzzsaw guitars + pummeling, primal rhythms. Recorded in 8 days in Austin, TX, with Spoon’s Jim Eno at his Public Hi-Fi studio, Butter is the follow up to their 2009 Fat Possum album Echo Kid & the 2007 self-titled Ecstatic Peace debut. It’s a spastic, slab of fun-filled fury, a double-live-gonzo Athena busting out of The Flamin’ Groovies’ Teenage Head, thrashing it’s way through punk, surf, & power-pop + leaving a wake of blown minds and melted faces. Butter is the product of 200 days a year in the van, sleeping on floors, accumulating the kind of stories you would never, ever tell your grandkids. Butter is the product of 2 years spent cranking out singles for Turbo Fruits’ own Turbo Time Records, the product of organizing their annual ocean-bound rock n’ roll party, The Bruise Cruise. Butter is born from busting their asses the way most bands pull bong rips. Butter is a wild, raw record for the kind of folks that aren’t ashamed to get loose, get sweaty & get down.

Flight Facilities + electronic pop + video + Grovesnor +

05. 15

Following their first 2 singles, “Crave You” + “Foreign Language,” Flight Facilities have a lot to live up to. But the DJ + production duo met the challenge & is sure to surpass all expectations. “With You” featuring Grovesnor, Flight Facilities’ brand new single, is already making international waves by finding its way into DJ sets across several continents.

Today, Flight Facilities release the With You EP via Future Classic that includes the original, an extended mix, + remixes by Germany’s David August, the 20 year old wiz kid on cult Hamburg label Diynamic, Danny Daze is the man behind the huge Hot Creation anthem “Your Everything” & UK duo MAM (Matt Hughes and Miguel Campbell).

If jaws dropped with Flight Facilities’ previous music videos, I don’t even know what the music video for “With You” will do. It’s a fully animated short film that tells a story about love, loss….& ROBOTS. You’ll have to watch the video to understand how cool it is. Check it out below.

Norwegian born Monica Birkenes produces pop that is equal parts organic magic & buzzing electricity, under the moniker of Mr Little Jeans. Latest single “Runaway” has received global recognition as has its stunning music video, directed by Zach Shields of Dead Man’s Bones. Check it out below & download the Fool’s Gold remix + stream TEPR’s from Yelle DJs dance-inducing take.
