Pond + garage rock + psychedelic + SXSW +

02. 23

“Mystery” is the latest cut off Pond’s forthcoming album Beard, Wives, Denim. It’s a woozy, psychedelic stumble through a sunburned outback.

Pond will be hitting the road shortly, with a string of dates across America + Australia. Their US tour kicks off in 2 weeks, with the band playing their very 1st US show on their album release day in DC. Pond will also be at SXSW, stay tuned for showcase + party announcements in the coming weeks.

Mixed by Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) + Rob Grant at Poon’s Head Studio in Perth, Beard, Wives, Denim will be out via Modular Recordings on March 6th.

Tycho + Keep Shelly In Athens + electronic + SXSW +

02. 22

The title track on Tycho’s long-awaited Dive LP is just that—a ripple effect record that sounds like 3 songs in one, as if sound/graphic designer Scott Hansen just discovered prog-rock & decided to apply its winding passages to his own singular blend of sinewy synths + bleached beats. It’s also the 1st Tycho song to feature a prominent guest musician; guitarist Zac Brown, in this case, who paints outside the lines of Hansen’s halcyon hooks with restless rhythms & monorail-like riffs.

The “Dive” single fleshes things out even further, as Keep Shelly in Athens + Memoryhouse—both rising underground artists in their own right—cut Hansen’s cloud-scraping composition in half & slow his cruise control chords down to a crawl. The misty vocal melodies are still there, but they’re now floating through an embryonic assembly of jittery cicadas, rusty gears, & lean loops that are both welcoming + a bit woozy. The sonic equivalent of staring at the sun for too long, really, or 2 sides of the same cracked mirror. Ghostly International is releasing the “Dive” single April 3rd on vinyl + digital download. Here’s KSiA as a freebie:

With two previous albums, 2009’s Summer Of Hate + 2010’s Sleep Forever, the band garnered righteous praise for their intoxicating blend of scuzzy, surfy, lo-fi noise pop & their thrilling live shows.
JD Samson + MEN + electronic pop +

02. 21

Brooklyn-based band/art/performance collective JD Samson + MEN released their new Next EP today! Self-produced with help from Jordan Lieb, who also worked on the debut album Talk About Body, the Next EP is self-released via JD Samson + MEN’s label MEN Make Music. The 3-track EP is available now on iTunes + also available on tour as a 200 limited edition with handmade screen-printed sleeves.

This year, the band will release 4 EPs. The next JD Samson + MEN EP, All the Way Thru, will be released this Spring with production work from Alex Suarez from Cobra Starship, + subsequent EP releases produced by XXXChange (Spankrock, The Kills) & JD Samson + MEN themselves. These 4 EP releases are true to the unique, non-conformative + collaborative style of earlier MEN productions, such as the partnership for a tour only split 7” with Brazil’s CSS, & “Who Am I to Feel So Free” feat Antony (from Antony & The Johnsons).

We can expect the band, now named JD Samson + MEN, instead of MEN for clarity & to emphasize the collaborative nature of the musical efforts on record + on stage, to continue their embrace & share collective spirit! The band is sharing the first single “Next”, as a free download for a week ONLY!

Crushed Beaks + Torches + indie rock + electronic +

02. 21

London bands Crushed Beaks + Torches have announced the release of a split download single featuring cover versions of each others songs. Torches’ version of Crushed Beaks’ “Close-Ups” is the 1st to be released, with Crushed Beaks’ version of Torches’ “VTOO” appearing online very soon.

The bands will celebrate the release of the tracks, with I Ching in tow, on 10th March at Power Lunches Cafe.

Both bands made great strides at the end of 2011 with acclaimed single releases - Crushed Beaks with “Close-Ups”/”Sun Dogs” & Torches with “VTOO”. Now recognised as 2 of London’s hottest up and coming acts, this new split release goes to further highlight their respective talents.

On this cover, Torches reweld the original’s upbeat urgency into something far more dark, brooding & synonymous with their own sound. Echoed accapellas prove to be the calm before an industrial storm of wrenched guitars, pounding drums + mesmerising drones of synthesisers twist the song’s once upbeat atmosphere into a wonderfully terrifying frenzy.
