How To Dress Well + electronic + experimental + r and b +

05. 22

Chicago based musician Tom Krell, aka How To Dress Well has joined Domino’s Weird World.

Krell’s burgeoning career began in 2009 when, having just moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, his songs began to emerge online via a hugely prolific string of free digital EPs posted in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for subtly devastating melody & elements of noise, sound collage & avant-garde composition, Krell’s debut album Love Remains offered an equally beautiful & troubling window into a startlingly realised artistic imagination.

Praised for both its conceptual strength + immediate emotional resonance, Love Remains duly garnered vast critical acclaim and highlights such as “Ready For The World” + “Decisions” saw Krell accredited with having given birth to a new, narcotized strain of R&B that has since spawned a host of imitators.

Since Love Remains, Krell has toured the world, recorded with an orchestra (the Just Once EP, with proceeds going to raise awareness about mental illness) &, always prolific, written + recorded a lot of new music – all whilst continuing work on a philosophy doctorate.

Krell’s new album Total Loss will see release through Weird World in the Autumn of 2012 & includes the (really really) beautiful “Ocean Floor For Everything” which can be downloaded below.

Elite Gymnastics + electronic + experimental +

05. 17

After a month of touring with Sleigh Bells, incredible responses for their RUIN 3 website & an amazing Korallreven remix/video, Elite Gymnastics would like to share the lead track from their just-released RUIN 4 package.

One of two original tracks included in the package, “Life/Trap” was a demo for the original RUIN 1 & 2 EP that did not end up making the final version. Updated with new production & mixed by Montreal’s CFCF, the track represents a step forward from the project’s previous material.

Out now on Acéphale, RUIN 4 should not be thought of as a standard CD release. It’s more of a fan package - including a shirt, poster, buttons & of course a CD.

With the Sleigh Bells tour under their belt, Elite are playing a couple of select shows next month in New York + Miami.

DARKSIDE + Nicolas Jaar + Dave Harrington + electronic + video +

05. 16

DARKSIDE began when a converter plug exploded in Nicolas Jaar & Dave Harrington’s Berlin hotel room during their summer tour. When the smoke cleared, their white Genelec speakers were fried. But rather than retiring for the night, they plugged into a computer & merged sounds, forming DARKSIDE.

The duo continued their symbiosis after returning to New York. Dave’s indie rock bravado & Nico’s electronic percussion came together in a series of Brooklyn recording sessions. In their dim basement studio, Dave’s soprano licks + Nico’s falsetto converged as they formed a 3 track, self-titled EP.

Check out their 1st video for “A1” directed by Pomp&Clout/Ryan Staake. Stream the 3 tracks right after.

Gold Panda + electronic + stream + tour dates +

05. 14

Following the release of his hugely acclaimed debut LP Lucky Shiner back in 2010, Gold Panda has announced a new 7” “Mountain”/”Financial District” & a selected tour of live dates + festival appearances. The digital version drops on today & tomorrow in some parts of the globe, while the 7” version is available June 11th/12th from Ghostly International worldwide + Notown in the UK only. Purchase & pre-order HERE.

An artist who’s never felt the need to try & find his place, or even give the notion of attempting to fit in credence, “Mountain”/”Financial District” is another wonderfully singular piece of work. It’s a return that he describes as a “short story”, hinting at something in the future that, even he confesses, could twist in a completely direction to the 2 tracks here – of which Derwin describes as “modern hip-hop”. He adds, “the 808 snares on ‘Mountain’ are a nod to Noah “40” Shebib and some-time Drake collaborators Boi-1da. ‘Financial District,’ at 125 bpm, though actually feels slower than that because the drum machine pattern on it has a completely different feel. It’s in the rhythms that I depart from that initial hip-hop idea.”

Reflective of Gold Panda’s increased time travelling the globe + jumping from place to place, “Mountain” & “Financial District” most definitely sit apart from each other in different atmospheres. ‘Mountain” the slightly warmer of the two, it’s huge reverberating percussive sound cocooning a myriad of skittering, pirouetting samples. “Financial District” meanwhile revolves around off-kilter drones that play off one another before being hoisted up by the return of that resolute rhythm. The track titles, Derwin explains, indirectly came about after a discussion with Brainfeeder artist Matthewdavid, who told him he needed better names for the tracks.“Listening to ‘Mountain’ again on a trip to Japan over New Year, we flew directly over Mt.Fuji and it seemed to just fit what I was seeing out of the window. ‘Financial District’ was just the opposite of the vast expanse of the mountain I guess. Crowded, synthetic and shiny… repetitive – and of course both can erupt at anytime.”

The Berlin-based producer will be off travelling again soon this summer as well, playing both Field Day + Parklife Festivals in the UK in early June before travelling around Europe’s festival circuit & a run of dates in the US this summer.

Disclosure + electronic + stream + experimental +

05. 12

As London warms up for a memorable 2012, homegrown production duo Disclosure look set to drop the soundtrack of the summer. The Face EP is the latest offering from brothers Guy + Howard Lawrence (aged just 20 & 17 respectively) who have already been graced by several tastemakers around the globe, toured the UK & Europe + supported SBTRKT on his UK tour. With its addictive sunshine sound, their latest EP looks set to compound Disclosure’s growing reputation as the UK’s most exciting - & uplifting - new producers.

Blending deep house bass lines, Dilla-esque snares + melodic two-step top lines, The Face showcases Disclosure as producers with a sonic maturity beyond their years. And despite its uptempo BPM, it’s a sound that Disclosure insist owes as much to ‘90s Hip Hop as it does to Detroit House & UK Garage. “We’re working around house tempos”, Guy explains, “but we’re not setting out to make house music just for the club. It’s more about the chords, melodies and vocals. We want a warm sound; a jazzy sound.”

This is only the beginning of Disclosure’s journey. Having racked up hundreds of thousands of Soundcloud plays with their remixes for Jessie Ware + Emeli Sande, the boys are currently working towards a much-anticipated debut album. And with their debut EP Carnival/I Love That…You Know clocking up over 50,000 downloads in over 150 countries to date, Disclosure have proved that their distinctively British style of music has true global appeal. Forget age limitations + lazy categorisations, Disclosure are simply the sound of electronic music – past, present, & future. The Face EP drops on June 4th & a remix EP will follow on July 30th. Both coming out via Greco-Roman.
