How To Dress Well + electronic + experimental + r and b +

05. 22

Chicago based musician Tom Krell, aka How To Dress Well has joined Domino’s Weird World.

Krell’s burgeoning career began in 2009 when, having just moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, his songs began to emerge online via a hugely prolific string of free digital EPs posted in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for subtly devastating melody & elements of noise, sound collage & avant-garde composition, Krell’s debut album Love Remains offered an equally beautiful & troubling window into a startlingly realised artistic imagination.

Praised for both its conceptual strength + immediate emotional resonance, Love Remains duly garnered vast critical acclaim and highlights such as “Ready For The World” + “Decisions” saw Krell accredited with having given birth to a new, narcotized strain of R&B that has since spawned a host of imitators.

Since Love Remains, Krell has toured the world, recorded with an orchestra (the Just Once EP, with proceeds going to raise awareness about mental illness) &, always prolific, written + recorded a lot of new music – all whilst continuing work on a philosophy doctorate.

Krell’s new album Total Loss will see release through Weird World in the Autumn of 2012 & includes the (really really) beautiful “Ocean Floor For Everything” which can be downloaded below.

Elite Gymnastics + electronic + experimental +

05. 17

After a month of touring with Sleigh Bells, incredible responses for their RUIN 3 website & an amazing Korallreven remix/video, Elite Gymnastics would like to share the lead track from their just-released RUIN 4 package.

One of two original tracks included in the package, “Life/Trap” was a demo for the original RUIN 1 & 2 EP that did not end up making the final version. Updated with new production & mixed by Montreal’s CFCF, the track represents a step forward from the project’s previous material.

Out now on Acéphale, RUIN 4 should not be thought of as a standard CD release. It’s more of a fan package - including a shirt, poster, buttons & of course a CD.

With the Sleigh Bells tour under their belt, Elite are playing a couple of select shows next month in New York + Miami.

Disclosure + electronic + stream + experimental +

As London warms up for a memorable 2012, homegrown production duo Disclosure look set to drop the soundtrack of the summer. The Face EP is the latest offering from brothers Guy + Howard Lawrence (aged just 20 & 17 respectively) who have already been graced by several tastemakers around the globe, toured the UK & Europe + supported SBTRKT on his UK tour. With its addictive sunshine sound, their latest EP looks set to compound Disclosure’s growing reputation as the UK’s most exciting - & uplifting - new producers.

Blending deep house bass lines, Dilla-esque snares + melodic two-step top lines, The Face showcases Disclosure as producers with a sonic maturity beyond their years. And despite its uptempo BPM, it’s a sound that Disclosure insist owes as much to ‘90s Hip Hop as it does to Detroit House & UK Garage. “We’re working around house tempos”, Guy explains, “but we’re not setting out to make house music just for the club. It’s more about the chords, melodies and vocals. We want a warm sound; a jazzy sound.”

This is only the beginning of Disclosure’s journey. Having racked up hundreds of thousands of Soundcloud plays with their remixes for Jessie Ware + Emeli Sande, the boys are currently working towards a much-anticipated debut album. And with their debut EP Carnival/I Love That…You Know clocking up over 50,000 downloads in over 150 countries to date, Disclosure have proved that their distinctively British style of music has true global appeal. Forget age limitations + lazy categorisations, Disclosure are simply the sound of electronic music – past, present, & future. The Face EP drops on June 4th & a remix EP will follow on July 30th. Both coming out via Greco-Roman.

Giraffage + XXYYX + Teen Daze + electronic + remix + experimental +

05. 08

San Francisco’s Charlie Yin, also known as Giraffage, sculpts sound with sonic malice + diversity. Like a possessed DJ having fun with samples in an experimental lab, the 21-year old multi-instrumentalist knows no boundaries. Collaborating with 16 year-old producer XXYYXX, the track puts hip-hop & jazz through the blender & demonstrates a certain expertise, that didn’t escape Kitsuné founder Gildas Loaëc, as the track is featured on the forthcoming compilation Kitsuné America. As an introduction to the SF based beat-smith Audyssey & Your Truly have come together to feature Yin on The Neighborhood Series. Throughout the video Yin takes viewers on a tour through his stomping grounds & explains the pluses + minuses of his location as well as what makes him tick when he’s producing.

As Kitsuné continues their journey over to the US - their 1st ever NYC store opened last month - it seemed fitting that one of the brighest stars on the Kitsuné America compilation expanded into his own EP. Out next week on the 15th, the EP features remixes by Teen Daze, Slow Magic, Reid, & The One AM Radio.

Supreme Cuts + electronic + experimental +

05. 07

The forthcoming record from astral Dons, Supreme Cuts, Whispers in the Dark, is being called a stoner’s masterpiece. Ripe with bass drops that suck the atmosphere from the room, starry, fully-glazed vocal samples so current they’re just barely not futuristic. The dup is pushing willfully into the next phase of electronic music.
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs + live + Mohawk + Austin + electronic + experimental +

05. 07

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs killed a lot of people in a cramped space on Wednesday night at Austin’s own Mohawk venue. Trampled at the feet of this young UK producer, the large crowd sandwiched themselves into Mohawk’s indoor stage room & danced enthusiastically on top of each other.

Before the massacre, Austin based duo Dancinatra warmed up the concertgoers, playing their brand of smooth electro-pop topped with a croon. The night was waning & I had work in the morning, but these guys won me over & not only convinced me to remain for the evening but also put some pep back in my step.

The Welikeitindie crew fought our way to the front between sets, prepped for some more dance beats & expecting some of the live antics that preceded TEED’s rep. I was taken aback as the equipment was set up. No less than 3 tables bolstered a plethora of DJ tools, samplers, keyboards, effects pedals & MIDI controllers. Seemed a bit much for one kid to handle…

Orlando Higginbottom emerged from the green room in his signature style, donning a brightly patterned body-suit & feathered vest that immediately garnered attention & held it. I know it is a growing trend for DJ/producers to wear outlandish masks/clothing on stage, but this was a whole other level of weird. Maybe I am just not hip enough to get it, but I will be the 1st to say you cannot judge a book by its cover. What followed when TEED powered up his magical tables of bells & whistles was one of the most provocative & intelligent dance sets I’ve seen. This was bolstered by the fact the despite his garish outfit & meek demeanor, TEED was amazingly proficient at juggling the multitude of things happening on stage. He wasn’t just hitting the play button, he was constantly moving from table to table, tweaking this & looping that & singing over it in his easy on the ears palatable voice. The sound was pristine, the drum programming exact & the sub-bass had surprising clarity. He made it all look effortless. He made it all look fun.

& fun we had. The crowd reacted to every new sound & stanza with a fevered ferocity fitting the act’s title. We were Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs stampeding in room with no exit. The only drawback fell on the venue as there was not enough space on stage for some of the props that TEED uses in conjunction with his attire to add stage presence & also not enough space on the dance floor, forcing the audience to grind on strangers or catch a stray hand in the face. Mohawk remains my favorite venue in town, but really they should have had this guy outside.

All in all though, it was a great time & I am now genuinely stoked for the debut LP TEED will have out June 12th. For now be sure to scoop up the “Garden” + “Tapes & Money” singles (the latter of which is packaged with a John Talabot remix that stands apart too).

Oh, & the next time Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs rage through your town, go & get eaten alive.

Lazer Sword + electronic + experimental + bass + stream +

05. 06

Lazer Sword, the duo comprised of Antaeus Roy (a.k.a Lando Kal) + Bryant Rutledge (a.k.a. Low Limit) released their sophomore album, Memory, last week on Monkeytown Records. Memory may not be a complete departure from Lazer Sword’s earlier work, but those looking for the slapping hip-hop beats + crunked-up vibes that defined the group’s past releases may be surprised to find that Roy & Rutledge have seriously trimmed the fat while simultaneously expanding their sonic palette. This is a sleeker, sexier version of Lazer Sword, one that take cues from ’80s electro, Detroit techno, + various brands of UK futurism. There is still plenty of low end, but the duo’s thick bass tones now serve as a jumping off point rather than a tool to bash you over the head. Preview a bit of Memory via album track, “Missed A Spot,” below.

Lazer Sword’s heart resides in the club, & in support of this new album, the duo will kicked off an international tour. They’ve put together a special set comprised of material from Memory, though as always, expect a proper dose of improvised button-pushing flair, rarely exhibited with such mastery in clubland.

Dent May + electronic pop + experimental + Prins Thomas + remix +

04. 30

In the years since signing with Paw Tracks in 2009, Mississippi native Dent May has made music that balances saccharine pop sincerity + campy affectation. His debut LP, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, put wry storytelling at its fore, but imbued each track with sweet strums of the titular instrument & earnest harmonies sure to arrest listeners’ sympathies. Eager to explore different styles, the 2 singles released since the album, “That Feeling” + “Fun,” have seen May plugging in & finding footing somewhere between 60s psychedelia & disco-era balladry in the vein of Ashford & Simpson, a vibe he expands on with his new record, Do Things (out 06.12).

Played entirely by himself + recorded in sessions split between his bedroom at the Cats Purring Dude Ranch & a small cabin by a cotton field outside Oxford, MS, Do Things finds the self-described “wedding reception band on acid” purveying the same heavy helpings of sentiment, but forgoing the jocular tone of his debut for a more contemplative-but still relentlessly optimistic-demeanor. Underneath the shiny veneer of synthesizer filigrees & harmonious coos, May zooms in on such timeless subjects as the nature of friendship, finding purpose in a world that seems devoid of it, & dealing with insistent feelings of malaise. “Funk” is certainly a word that’s written all over the album, & May’s Orange Juice-ian take on it lends songs like “Best Friend” + “Don’t Wait Too Long” a sprightly boogie & conjures images of soft-lit rooms & mirror balls. When not thumping & grooving, Do Things bops & sways along the psych-pop avenues of “Tell Her” & the ascending melodies of “Find It.” Full of stylistic changes but retaining May’s singular voice, Do Things is a great step forward for the pop devotee.
